Madame White Snake

The Legend of the White Snake, also known as Madame White Snake, is a Chinese legend

The legend is now counted as one of China's Four Great Folktales major love legends

The Legend of the White Snake describes a tortuous love story between a human-shaped snake spirit and a man

The story includes plots such as borrowing an umbrella from a canopy boat, white lady stealing Ganoderma lucidum and grass, water over Jinshan, Broken Bridge, Leifeng Pagoda, Xuxian's son Shilin Pagoda, Fahai escapes from his crab belly and escapes to death

The earliest attempt to fictionalize the story in printed form appears to be The White Maiden Locked for Eternity in the Leifeng Pagoda in Feng Menglong's Stories to Caution the World, which was written during the Ming dynasty.

It expresses the people's admiration and yearning for the free love of men and women and their hatred for the unreasonable restraints of feudal forces

It was included in the "first batch of national intangible cultural heritage

It has since been presented in a number of major Chinese operas, films, and television series and cartoons
